Naomi Osaka's Australian Open hopes are uncertain after she pulled out of the final in Auckland due to an abdominal injury. The four-time Grand Slam champion was leading the match against Clara Tauson when she retired.
Australian tennis star Naomi Osaka's Australian Open campaign has been thrown into doubt after she withdrew from the final of a WTA tournament in Auckland on Sunday with an apparent abdominal injury. Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1, consulted with her coach Patrick Mouratoglou, the chair umpire, and a tour trainer before making the decision to retire.
While the exact nature of the injury was not immediately disclosed, it appeared to be abdominal, distinct from the back injury she sustained at the China Open in October 2023, which prematurely ended her season. Osaka was visibly emotional as she sat awaiting medical attention. She left the court to a subdued applause from the spectators before returning for the prize-giving ceremony. Osaka had won the first set against Clara Tauson in Auckland before withdrawing. 'I've enjoyed playing here and I'm sorry it had to end this way,' Osaka stated. Osaka held a 5-1 lead with two breaks of serve when she began to display signs of discomfort, exhibiting a decrease in power during her serve. Despite managing to secure the first set, she ultimately indicated her inability to continue. Osaka's return to tennis commenced at the beginning of 2024 following a lengthy break after the birth of her daughter, Shai. This tournament final marked her first since her return and, had she emerged victorious, it would have been her first title since the 2021 Australian Open
