A former county corrections officer has been found guilty of making terroristic threats and other charges after prosecutors said he threatened a former prisoner with whom he was accused of having a relationship.
During an internal affairs investigation at Cumberland County Jail, officials learned that corrections officer Neal J. Armstrong, 35, of Vineland, allegedly threatened to kill the former prisoner in 2017 if she disclosed their ongoing relationship, which included alleged sexual favors and drug use at a residence in Millville, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office.
While the investigation was ongoing in July 2018, Armstrong allegedly contacted a friend for help in remotely deleting incriminating messages and data from his cellphone, which had been previously seized by investigators, the prosecutor’s office said. A jury found Armstrong guilty Thursday on charges of third-degree terroristic threats, second-degree hindering apprehension or prosecution, third-degree attempted hindering and simple assault by physical menace, a disorderly persons offense.
The jury acquitted Armstrong on a second-degree firearm possession charge and fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm charge.Our journalism needs your support. Please subscribe today to
