In his first season playing high school tennis, he leads Sultans to team title before winning the singles championship, 6-2, 6-0 over Torrey Pines' Freedman
Santana High’s principal showed up for Rohan Murali’s CIF San Diego Section singles tennis championship match. So did a vice principal, multiple teachers, teammates and students as the Sultans filled an entire section of stands at the Balboa Tennis Club on Saturday.After focusing on academics, then regional and national tournaments his first three years at Santana, Murali played high school tennis for the first time this season.
After ending Saturday’s match on a forehand winner down the line, Murali shook hands with Freedman at the net, walked over and shook hands with the referee, then returned to his bench, a 100-watt smile on his face as he acknowledged the fans’ applause. Despite his modest size, Murali hits the ball with hard pace off both sides from the baseline. Extremely quick, he chased down many shots that would have been winners against other players. With Freedman on the run, he showed off deft drop shots and came to the net when needed.
“He’s highly admired on campus. Most people didn’t know anything about him until he played tennis this year. They had no idea about the brilliance of Rohan.”No. 1-seeded brothers M.J. and A.J. Abarca of Otay Ranch lost their first set in the tournament but rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over second-seeded Franklin Liu and Kyle Villaponteau of Canyon Crest Academy.
