FILE - Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky. , speaks at the annual Fancy Farm picnic Aug. 2, 2025, in Fancy Farm, Ky. Barr, who was endorsed by Trump, beat Daniel Cameron, a former state attorney general who leaned into his Christianity on the campaign trail.

The winner in November will replace U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, who is stepping down in a generational changing of the guard for Republicans. Trump swayed the race not just through his endorsement but by offering a third challenger, Nate Morris, an ambassadorship just over two weeks before Election Day. Morris, who fashioned himself as the MAGA candidate, withdrew from the race and encouraged his backers to support Barr.

Barr was first elected in 2012 in the 6th Congressional District. He is expected to win the general election in the Republican-dominated state. Eleven polling places in Georgia’s Cobb County, in the Atlanta suburbs, will be staying open late because of issues that arose during the day. Blake Evans, who oversees elections for the secretary of state’s office, said the precincts were staying open because of problems with the electronic poll pads that are used to to check in voters.

The extensions range from six minutes at one location to an hour at another, according to a judge’s order. Deputy Secretary of State Matt Tyser said they are waiting on an order from a Fulton County judge to extend voting at a precinct in Sandy Springs, just north of Atlanta. That’s because a “law enforcement issue” that was unrelated to the election forced the closure of the polling place for several hours.

Most of the polls in the state closed at 6 p.m. ET, including in the 4th District where U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie is up against Ed Gallrein in the Republican primary that’s garnered national attention.

The president picked Gallrein to compete against Massie, who’s frustrated Trump partly by pushing for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Its 5th District, considered the most competitive, was flipped by Republicans for the first time in decades in 2022 but reclaimed by Democrats in 2024. The district stretches from southern Portland across the Cascade Range to Bend. The incumbent, Democratic Rep.

Janelle Bynum, is running against a primary opponent who has not reported raising any money. Two candidates, a county commissioner and a political consultant, are running in the district’s GOP primary in the hope of trying to win the seat back for Republicans in November. Perry, who is uncontested in the GOP primary, has survived repeated attempts by Democrats to unseat him.

Doug Jones, D-Ala. , and gubernatorial candidate speaks during an event Friday, Dec. 12, 2025, in Birmingham, Ala. Tuberville could face former U.S. Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat, if both men secure their parties’ nominations.

The two last competed in the 2020 Senate race, when Tuberville easily defeated Jones, who was then the incumbent. Tuberville was boosted by a Trump endorsement and his high profile from his years as a football coach. Jones, a former U.S. attorney, won a 2017 special election for U.S. Senate over Republican Roy Moore. Jones remains the last Democrat to win a statewide race in Alabama.

When Geoff Duncan was Georgia’s lieutenant governor, he resisted Trump’s efforts to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the state in 2020. He’s since left the Republican Party, and he’s running for governor as a Democrat. It’s an interesting example of how traditional partisan lines have been scrambled since Trump rose to power a decade ago. Many Republicans who have crossed the president have retired or been defeated in primaries.

Only a few of them have attempted to switch parties like Duncan.

“I just filled up my car. Normally it takes close to $50,” said Kymberly Moore, a 50-year-old hairstylist who spent $70 to fill her tank.

Elected to her first term as governor in 2022 after years in the Legislature, Kotek pledged to tackle homelessness, mental health and education. Despite approving funding and programs aimed at those issues, the state has continued to see rising homelessness and flagging student test scores that have failed to return to pre-pandemic levels.

Kotek also has sparred with the Trump administration, which sought to deploy the National Guard to Portland last fall during its immigration crackdown for the stated purpose of protecting federal property and personnel. After the state and city sued to block the deployment, a federal judge found that protests at Portland’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building didn’t meet the conditions for using the military domestically under federal law. But he was unsure where the dispute stood.

Tuskegee sits in Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District now represented by Democratic Rep. Shomari Figures. The state plans to void the results of Tuesday’s election and hold new primaries in August under a different map that would give the GOP a chance to reclaim the district. Lee’s father was a clerk for the famed Tuskegee Airmen, and Lee was a plaintiff in the 1963 lawsuit that helped desegregate public schools in the state.

He said there was “a lot of excitement” about Figures’ election in 2024. Thomas Massie, R-KY, wears his invention, the Debt Badge, after a Kentucky Educational Television debate, Monday, May 4, 2026, in Lexington, Ky. Massie angered Trump by voting against his signature tax legislation over concerns of adding to the national debt, pushing for the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files and opposing his decision to go to war with Iran. His positions, Massie insists, reflect the America First promises Trump initially made on the campaign trail.

Voters have sent Massie back to Congress ever since his first election in 2012, embracing his stalwart independence and jaunty personality. Back in 2020, they brushed off Trump’s social media demand to throw Massie out of the Republican Party because he was a “third rate Grandstander. ”Vice President JD Vance speaks to reporters during a during a press briefing at the White House, Tuesday, May 19, 2026, in Washington.

” Echoing Trump’s endorsement statement, Vance noted that he has known Cornyn for a long time, but that ultimately, Paxton was the one who was there for the president.

Trump’s Tuesday endorsement of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton supercharges his effort to oust incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in a Republican primary runoff.

“Ken is a true MAGA Warrior who has ALWAYS delivered for Texas, and will continue to do so in the United States Senate,” Trump wrote on social media. When news of the endorsement broke, Paxton supporters began cheering and dancing to “YMCA,” a Trump campaign anthem, at an event in Allen, Texas, where the attorney general was scheduled to speak. Paxton and Cornyn qualified for the May 26 runoff after a March 3 primary, while Rep.

Wesley Hunt finished third and did not advance. Although the four-term Cornyn has backed Trump’s agenda in Washington, Paxton pitched himself as a political warrior for the Make America Great Again movement. Trump’s endorsement puts him at odds with his party’s establishment, which is convinced that Cornyn is the better candidate for November’s general election. , would revert the state to its 2023 Republican-drawn congressional map.

Elections typically don’t become final and official until the results are certified, and that sometimes doesn’t happen for several weeks after the polls have closed. Yet, it’s usually possible to determine who won long before that.in elections for nearly 180 years, filling what could otherwise be a critical information void of up to a month between Election Day and the official certification of results.

For every election, the AP’s team of election journalists and analysts closely monitors key information about the votes counted so far, like where and how they were cast, as well as how many votes remain to be counted and from what areas. , Friday, Aug. 4, 2023. Oregon drivers can now pump their own gas for the first time since the 1950s, after Gov. Tina Kotek signed a bill allowing people across the state to choose between having an attendant pump their gas or doing it themselves. They are being asked whether to approve a 6-cent-a-gallon gas tax increase passed by the Democratic-controlled Legislature last fall.

Democrats increased the tax and other fees to help pay for road improvements and plug a hole in the state’s transportation budget. Republicans responded by launching a successful referendum campaign to refer the tax and fee increases to the ballot, saying they drive the cost of living even higher. Democrats say the main cause of skyrocketing gas prices is Trump’s decision to go to war with Iran.

But they’ve acknowledged the difficult timing of the ballot measure, which has also complicated national Democrats’ affordability messaging in midterm campaigning. Many Republicans, while admiring McConnell’s achievements, see him as out of step with the Make America Great Again and America First movements spawned by Trump. The race highlights the complicated politics of succeeding McConnell, as candidates try to embrace Trump’s movement without alienating voters who still respect the retiring senator’s legacy.

The increase in senators looking toward statehouses underscores how sharply the balance of political ambition has shifted away from Washington. Governorships also offer what the Senate usually cannot: the ability to govern, build a record and shape a national profile.

“Everybody asks me, ‘Why are you doing this? ’” Tuberville told the AP.

“Because I think I can do more good in that seat than I can in this one. ”The state is home to four Republican-held seats that Democrats want to flip as the party tries to win House control for the rest of Trump’s term. Brian Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mackenzie and Scott Perry. Gov. Ossoff is the only Democratic senator running for reelection in a state that Trump won two years ago.

If Republicans are able to defeat him, it would likely ensure they keep their majority in the Senate.in the primary include Rep. Mike Collins, Rep. Democrats increased the gas tax to 46 cents a gallon from 40 cents to help fix roads as budget projections showed declining gas tax revenue because of a consumer shift to more fuel-efficient, electric and hybrid vehicles. But after Republicans referred the tax and other fee increases to the ballot, Democrats didn’t organize efforts to support their plan.

They have expressed doubt about the chances of voters opting to retain the tax increase as the Iran war causes prices at the pump to soar. Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek, who signed off on the increases, has already launched a working group to come up with ideas for funding transportation needs. It had its first meeting earlier this month and is expected to share final recommendations by the end of the year.

U.S. Rep. Barry Moore received Trump’s endorsement to replace Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is stepping down to run for governor. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall is another leading candidate.

Moore is a three-term congressman and member of the House’s conservative Freedom Caucus. Trump wrote on social media that Moore is “one of my all time favorites” and “a totally reliable MAGA Warrior! ” Marshall is stressing his record as attorney general, including his work with other Republican-led states in filing court actions that challenged former President Joe Biden’s policies and supported Trump.

The crowded field increases the chance that no one will receive a majority of the vote, which would lead to a June 16 runoff. No Republican is seeking the party’s nomination for the 3rd District, based in Philadelphia. So the Democratic primary winner is a shoo-in to succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Dwight Evans.
