The conference's coaches vote Utah State's Great Osobor as the top player and SDSU's Lamont Butler as defensive player of the year
Utah State coach Danny Sprinkle, apparently, is never voting for postseason awards again. He made the vow Saturday night after point guard Darius Brown II made a last-second 3 to beat New Mexico and clinch the Mountain West regular-season title despite being picked ninth in the preseason poll, saying in a TV interview that “if he’s not MVP, I’m never voting again.
A year ago, the media named Butler as its defensive player of the year while the coaches picked teammate Nathan Mensah. It is the third straight season and seventh time in the last 10 that SDSU has claimed defensive player of the year from the coaches. LeDee was first team all-conference and Butler was honorable mention, meaning he got at least one vote. That was it for Aztecs awards.
