The Texas Association of School Boards' poll shows most want more public education funding.

The poll of 804 registered voters was conducted in February for the, a nonprofit that provides services to school districts. According to the poll, released Tuesday, 55 percent said they were less likely to support vouchers as a way to choose education, and 56 percent said the state does not provide enough funding for public education.

"These results highlight bipartisan support against shifting public money into a new, costly entitlement program that would benefit wealthy families in urban areas to the detriment of public schools," TASB Executive Director Dan Troxell said in a statement."At the same time, the poll shows that Texans want their elected officials to make public education a priority.

Troxell added that most Texans, regardless of their political party, want a raise for public school teachers. About 70 percent of respondents reported a positive impression of public educators in their school district. Earlier this year, the State Board of Education chose to drop language opposing school voucher programs from its list of legislative priorities. And earlier this month, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a vocal supporter of the voucher system, said in a speech that parents"deserve the freedom to choose the education pathway that is best for their child."
