Morrisons plan to demolition Blackburn store ahead of Thwaites Brewery site move
The move of Blackburn’s flagship Morrisons supermarket to the former Thwaites brewery site – key to £250million plans to regenerate the town centre – has taken a major step forward.
It is now in advanced talks to sell the land with the Yorkshire-based supermarket chain. The project to knock down Morrisons existing 1980s store and move it to the seven acre site in Penny Street is vital to the £250 million Blackburn town centre masterplan published in December 2021.The land was vacated when Thwaites moved to Mellor Brook in the Ribble Valley in 2018.
The masterplan would also see new green spaces, trees and shrubs dotted in and around the 12 acres of land identified for redevelopment. The council hopes that 1,000 jobs could be created over the next ten years. “The contract is being prepared and design progressed with a planning application scheduled to be submitted in early 2023.”
