A moose trapped in a partially frozen lake in New York was rescued by a team of forest rangers and conservation officers. They used a chainsaw to create a channel for the moose to swim to shore.

A moose was rescued from a partially frozen lake in Hamilton County, New York , on January 16th. A passerby spotted the approximately 1,000-pound moose trapped in Lake Abanakee, where temperatures were around 12 degrees. The moose had wandered about 200 feet from the shore before breaking through the ice and falling into the frigid water. A team of New York State Forest Rangers and Environmental Conservation Police officers responded to the scene.

They faced a unique challenge and needed to think creatively. They initially requested an airboat to assist with the rescue, but it was unclear when it would arrive. Recognizing the urgency, the rescuers devised a plan to chisel a channel in the ice using a chainsaw. They worked quickly, knowing that time was of the essence in the icy water. One ranger carved a path through the ice, while another cleared blocks to create a passage for the moose to reach shallower water. They donned cold water suits, dry suits with flotation, and had backup plans in case anyone fell into the lake, which is about 12 feet deep. To guide the moose, they tried poking it, but it didn't budge. They then pushed their jet sleds close to the moose, prompting it to move. The moose swam towards the shore, guided by the rescuers. Despite being submerged for about two hours, the moose managed to climb out of the water, although it was exhausted and shivering. The sight of the massive animal standing up and regaining its footing was a reward for the team's hard work and quick thinking
