Montgomery audit finds school system lacking clear approach to anti-racism
The audit results were to be released in June, but the coronavirus pandemic delayed the timeline, system leaders said. Each school will also receive an individual report based on the survey results.The audit found the school system had many policies to eliminate racial disparities among students, staff and families, but their implementation varied school by school, “suggesting that the system is currently fragmented.
Arvin Kim, the student member of the school board and a senior at Walt Whitman High School, said community engagement with the audit gave him “renewed optimism.” Kim, who is Asian American, said that during his elementary school years, he didn’t have a lot of peers who looked like him, and that made him question whether he had a place in the school building. He said that working with the community would be critical in crafting the next steps.
“We can look at statistics all day, but there’s a clear, lived experience that should really inform this work around equity,” Kim, 17, said.
