Montgomery, Alabama
The Montgomery City Council has made a change in how the mayor can enter into contracts without its approval.
The mayor will now be allowed to enter into a contract on his own with a spending amount of $50,000, which is double the previous amount of $25,000.American Rescue Plan Act money isn’t affected by the change.“We have a budgeting process, but we also, we have a priority listed, how those things are getting done, and I think this increases it. The level of accountability, the level of checks and balances for the city and also brings us to the table to have discussions,” Szymanski said.
“But I still think that an ordinance in this case is needed. I think that as we had operated over the last five years that’s provided not only great production and great results on behalf of the city, but I think it’s also provided great stewardship that the city has benefited from that the taxpayers have benefited. From as well, without an ordinance, limiting what we can do and when we can do it, ” Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed said.
