When the cruise season started in April, Steven Stimpson knew his Pike Place Market shop, Jack's Fish Spot, would be busy.
"We get a schedule at the beginning of the year and we looked at it and we were astonished by how many cruise ships were coming through," he said.
According to the Port of Seattle, 289 ships docked on the waterfront during this year's season, which ended Monday. The port initially predicted that would bring in 1.4 million revenue passengers.But many at Pike Place Market don't expect a big season-ending drop-off in business. "Our winter slowdown isn't as slow as it used to be," said Louisiana Levy, who works at Three Girls Bakery. "It's more locals coming in to the shop."
Each ship brings in about $4 million and more than $900 million in local spending during the year. It's a big boost as many business owners, especially in hospitality, are still coming out of the pandemic pause.The industry is changing quickly to reduce emissions as the ships get bigger. The Port of Seattle has shore power at Pier 91 and will add it to Pier 66 in time for the 2024 cruise season."Anybody who's trying to do something, I think is a positive." Stimpson said.
