Mother’s Day has come and gone, but it’s celebrated year round for my mother, Valeria Cardona-Trinidad, who lives on in our memories and hearts.

Martin.
She raised us with an appreciation for reading and music. Magazines, newspapers and books were throughout our house. Volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica filled a bookcase above a table lined with Good Housekeeping, Jet and Stars and Stripes newspapers. On April 4, 1968, I recall her calling us inside from roughhousing with friends in the front yard — Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated.
