San Jose mayor Matt Mahan and four predecessors penned a letter earlier this month asking MLB to suspend the Giants’ territorial rights.
Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred offered a curt response to five San Jose mayorsasking for MLB to consider suspending territorial rights and consider San Jose for an expansion team.
“At least until that process is complete, we are not in a position to take any other actions with respect to the territories in Northern California or to consider the possibility of expansion.” Mahan told this news organization that he understood MLB’s call for patience, but is not ready to accept inaction in the long run.
San Jose sued MLB in 2013 for conspiring to block the potential relocation, claiming the territory rules violated federal antitrust laws . The courts sided with MLB, and San Jose’s appeal up to the Supreme Court was rejected in 2015.
