A decision this week by the grocery chain Kroger to ban a customer who reportedly yelled racial slurs at a Black employee in a Missouri City store should have been made earlier, a community activist and local civil rights organizations said.

A livestream broadcasts a press conference Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023, at a Kroger store in Missouri City. Civil rights advocates called the press conference because they said a white male customer at the store had verbally assaulted a Black manager using racial slurs. Kroger said they had banned the man from the store.

“He’s been back on a regular basis since Jan. 9 and he’s been targeting her,” Campbell said. “This is unbelievable that this is happening in 2023. I was so shocked at the attack upon this young lady who could have been my daughter.”“Kroger’s failure to address this incident in a timely and effective manner has me wondering why my complaint was ignored,” Campbell said on Wednesday."This incident was only addressed after I emailed Kroger’s CEO about our press conference.

“I don’t believe that Kroger would have allowed someone to vandalize its glass doors without immediate repercussions," Campbell said."Or if a customer who was a Back man had verbally assaulted a white female Kroger associate, Kroger would have had him arrested immediately." “The Jan. 9 incident should have been immediately addressed by Kroger’s leadership and not ignored until a press conference was announced,” said Brass. “It should not have taken Kroger a month to address this racially motivated verbal attack.”
