Millie Bobby Brown is back – not that she ever really left – and this time around, she's adding ‘director’ to her CV.
Today, thevia Zoom to discuss her latest project: a coming-of-age short film, examining the psychological impact of becoming a woman in the public eye. Naturally, Millie has a starring role in the film, but she's also embraced the responsibility of, you know, directing the whole thing – with a little help from her brother, Charlie Brown, who filmed it all on a Samsung Galaxy S22.
I was definitely nervous because my story is complicated and it's not like the regular kind of childhood. There's a lot of story to tell and I wanted to tell it right. So I thought that it would be important to bring in this younger girl [Honey] to show what I was like before my fame and how I’ve got her, as well as who I am now.I’d say, hold on. You are going to go on a crazy ride! Try and remember who you are and not the people around you.
Amazing. [Honey] obviously is an incredible little actress and I saw so much of me in her when we were casting. I loved her energy. I loved her spirit. It was so much like mine aged six. I felt like what better way to truly tell this story with someone that resembles me but also has her own kind of amazing spice.She was so smiley, giggly and mischievous – and I was very much like that. I was very naughty. We constantly bribed her, which was amazing.
I find it important, though, as we all have to be healthy and give our body the exercise it needs. So I find using aerial silks really fun and therapeutic – it gives me a break from the world. And you find art within it. While I was doing it, I thought, gosh, the silks in so many ways represent womanhood: there’s strength, both masculinity and femininity, and you can create poses and shapes that are so different to show your sexuality.
