The Veterans Picnic saw local VFW and American Legion collaborate to provide awareness and services.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The veteran community gathered over the weekend to celebrate each other and learn about the services that are available.

“Everybody’s always had there own picnics and separate and you know we decided to get together as a veterans community and everybody get together because we all have the same focus,” said Christopher Bedel, the commander or American Legion Post 57. “When we join together our posts from different organizations we get more people involved, more veterans can come and talk and then they can collaborate together,” said Pam Cawley, the department commander for Dept. of Alaska for the American Legion.

Many veterans are a member of both organizations but, “up here in Alaska our community could be thousands of miles wide.” The large distance presents challenges as there are many veterans spread throughout that distance. Adding to the difficulties, the interior only has three veteran services officers each helping hundreds of veterans.
