Will the Giants or Jets or someone else hire Mike Vrabel?
The Jets have had three coaches since Rex Ryan — Todd Bowles, Adam Gase, and Robert Saleh. Only Gase had previous head coaching experience, and he didn’t have a ton of success in three seasons with the Dolphins .The Giants have had four coaches since Tom Coughlin — Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge, and Brian Daboll. Only Shurmur had been a head coach .
Yes, he went 7-10 and 6-11 in his final two seasons with the Titans. But in the previous two, he finished 12-5 and 11-5 . Vrabel is not a perfect candidate. As a defensive-minded coach, he’d need to find someone to mold a young quarterback with the Jets or Giants. But he will be sought after in 2025.
If the Giants retain hot-seat GM Joe Schoen, the Jets would have the advantage there, since they went with a full house cleaning. And the Jets obviously have a better overall roster. They haven’t had head coaching openings in the same offseason since 1997, when the Jets hired legendary former Giants coach Bill Parcells and the Giants hired Jim Fassel. Before that, it happened in 1983, when the Giants promoted Parcells and the Jets promoted Joe Walton.
