Microsoft's ambitious investment aims to build data centers capable of handling the growing demands of artificial intelligence workloads. The majority of the investment will be directed towards the United States, reflecting its crucial role in the global AI race.
Microsoft plans to invest $80 billion in fiscal 2025 to build data centers capable of handling artificial intelligence workloads. As stated in a Friday blog post, over half of this investment will be allocated within the United States. Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith highlighted this commitment, emphasizing the U.S.'s leading role in the global AI race, driven by private capital and innovations from companies of all sizes.
Smith cited Microsoft's partnerships with OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI, along with the company's own AI-powered software platforms and applications, as examples of this progress. The surge in popularity of OpenAI's ChatGPT, launched in late 2022, has spurred a competitive race among companies to develop their own generative AI capabilities. In the first quarter of fiscal 2025, Microsoft reported $20 billion in capital expenditures and assets acquired under finance leases globally, with $14.9 billion allocated to property and equipment. Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood indicated in October that capital expenditures are projected to rise sequentially in the second quarter of fiscal 2025
