A week after microbiome startup uBiome’s offices were reportedly raided by the FBI, its cofounders have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

The board of San Francisco-based microbiome genomics startup uBiome saidthat its cofounders and co-CEOs, Jessica Richman and Zac Apte, have been placed on administrative leave. The company’s general counsel, John Rakow, has been elevated to CEO in the interim.

The statement from uBiome appears to confirm that the company’s billing practices are under investigation, however. In it, the company says there will be “an independent investigation into uBiome’s billing practices to be overseen by a Special Committee of the Board.” The startup is no stranger to controversy. It launched in 2012 with a $350,000 crowdfunding effort to develop its product, an at-home kit where customers can take a self-sample and sent it in to receive a test of their microbiomes—the hundreds of different species of bacteria in people that can affect health.
