We chat with PaintMovie stars Michaela Watkins (michaelaWat) and Wendi McLendon-Covey discuss working with Owen Wilson and Ciara Renée, as well as playing out '90s flashbacks:
Owen Wilson helms the new indie comedy Paint, but the story is just as much about the women around him empowering themselves after seeing him more clearly. Now in theaters from IFC Films, Paint explores how nostalgia for the past blurs the mediocrity of the present, and how mistaking the two has consequences for everyone.
Wendi McLendon-Covey: Well, I sure did try to swoop in there and pick up where Michaela's character left off. But it was never going to be me. It was never going to be me, and even though he broke up with me very shortly after, I've been hanging on for decades. I'm just waiting for my number to come up again, and it's never going to.
Michaela Watkins: We're both these jilted lovers of Carl Nargle, but I think everybody is stunted and stuck in the moment. Wendi with her Juicy Couture pants that she was wearing, which harken back to the '90s. I'm probably in my get-up from when I was first dating him. It's like everybody is clinging to the happiest, most exciting moment of their lives in this quiet little town.
Carl loves to take people to a special place with his paintings. Wendi, if you had to paint one special place forevermore, which would it be?
