The leader of a Mexican drug cartel was arrested Thursday in the U.S.
Mexican drug lord Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada and the son of notorious narco "El Chapo" Guzman have been arrested in El Paso.
The list reportedly includes “El Chapo,” another of El Chapo’s sons and an alleged Cartel leader, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, as well as the Cartel’s alleged lead sicario Nestor Isidro Perez Salas, or “El Nini.” In the Northern District of Illinois indictment unsealed in 2009, Zambada’s son, Vicente Zambada Niebla, was also charged. Zambada Niebla was arrested by Mexican authorities that same year and extradited back to the United States to face charges in Chicago in 2013. Zambada Niebla eventually pled guilty and agreed to cooperate, testifying against Joaquin Guzman Loera at his trial in Brooklyn, New York, in January 2019. He was sentenced to 15 years of incarceration in May 2019.
