Steve Cohen isn't hiding behind one of the Mets' all-time embarrassments.
That is, of course, the day in which former outfielder Bobby Bonilla collects a $1,193,248.20 check from the Mets over a deferred payment plan that started in 2011 and will last through 2035.But instead of solely being the butt of jokes and embarrassment for what a previous regime decided in 2020 — a $5.9 million buy out in deferred payments that included 8% interest — Mets fans and owner Steve Cohen alike have opted to make it a day of celebration. Bobby Bonilla Day, if you will.
“It’s not something I’m thinking about at this particular time because I have a high school student entering his senior year coming up in August,” said Bonilla, who also received $500,000 in deferred payments from the Orioles on July 1 every year. Bonilla told the Post that July 1 is almost like his “birthday,” and it looks like that date could receive more fanfare in the future. Cohen celebrated it more formally in his first year as owner in 2021.
