The New York Mets are considering signing top free agent reliever Tanner Scott to bolster their bullpen after focusing on their starting lineup and rotation.
Tanner Scott , a top free-agent reliever, recently met with team officials, a league source confirmed Tuesday. Scott, 30, posted a 1.75 ERA with 22 saves in 72 appearances for the Marlins and Padres last season. The Mets have a few returning relievers including Diaz, Reed Garrett, Jose Butto (who could also start), Sean Reid-Foley, Dedniel Nunez, and Huascar Brazoban.
The Mets have focused mainly on their starting rotation and lineup, but there are still many proven relievers available on the market. Scott would likely need a multi-year contract, which Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns avoided last winter when building the bullpen. However, Stearns retooled the bullpen during the season by acquiring Phil Maton and Ryne Stanek, both veteran right-handers who are now free agents. They helped solidify the Mets' bullpen during their playoff run. Besides Scott, other top relievers on the market include Jeff Hoffman, David Robertson, Kenley Jansen, Kirby Yates, and Carlos Estevez.
