The MetroHealth Board of Trustees says an investigation shows Boutros authorized more than $1.9 million in supplemental bonuses for himself without telling the board.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — MetroHealth President and CEO Akram Boutros, who had led the hospital system for nearly 10 years, was fired Monday night by the Board of Trustees, saying Boutros had given himself more than $1.9 million in unauthorized bonuses.on the MetroHealth website. Boutros was released immediately.

Perhaps most notable was the $1 billion overhaul of the hospital’s main campus in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood. The Glick Center, the $767 million, 11-story inpatient tower located west of Scranton Road,Monday’s statement says an investigation showed Boutros had awarded himself the unauthorized bonuses between 2018 and 2022. Trustees were unaware of the bonuses, the statement says, a which is violation of Boutros’ contract.
Boutros has repaid the hospital system $2.1 million for the bonuses, which includes interest. Boutros also has reported his actions to the Ohio Ethics Commission.
