After four years of turnover in its top job, Nick Brown brought six years of steady leadership to the Merrillville Community School Corp. while raising graduation rates and launching several capital projects, including a new career technical education building. The school board approved Brown’s retirement during Tuesday’s meeting.

Earlier that day, Brown shared a letter with school employees announcing the retirement. “We hate to see you go, but when you know, you know,” said board president Judy Dunlap. “With the devastating news on Sunday, it makes you realize what’s important.” On Sunday, Pat Damron, the husband of Meghan Damron, Merrillville’s chief financial officer, died suddenly during a trip to Missouri to watch their daughter play soccer for Truman State University.

Next up is work on a new high school cafeteria and kitchen. Brown’s departure caps 33 years in education, including seven years at superintendent in Porter Township. During Brown’s tenure at Merrillville, he said graduation rates increased to 93%. “This is a clear indication of our commitment to providing a high-quality education and supporting every student on their journey to graduation,” said Brown, 61.
