The spill was discovered on May 8.

MARTINEZ — A week-long clean-up of a mercury spill that closed a train station and blocked off areas of this city left the toxic substance in only isolated areas Monday amid the station’s re-opening.

The Contra Costa County Health Services Department in a statement said hazardous materials workers “have removed nearly all mercury found in Martinez streets after last week’s spill, with a few isolated locations remaining.” A health advisory for areas where the mercury spill happened remained in place. Those areas include the Amtrak train station and parking lot; Marina Vista Avenue between the station and Alhambra Avenue; Alhambra Avenue from Marina Vista Avenue to Buckley Street; Buckley Street from Alhambra Avenue to Talbart Street; Berrellesa Street from Buckley north to the Martinez City Works yard; and Escobar Street from Pine Street east to Marina Vista.

The Amtrak station re-opened Monday, and health officials said there was no danger. In the days after the spill, trains detoured around the station, and passengers caught the train at a different place near the station. The Health Services Department also said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has taken over as the lead agency in the clean-up effort, which this week will focus on Joe DiMaggio Drive leading to the Waterfront Park softball fields at the Martinez Marina.

Hazardous materials personnel contacted several people who reported walking in areas or otherwise making contact with the mercury and has not found any mercury left over on shoes or clothing, according to the health services department.
