But the main reason he’s here is “Love’s Philosophy,” a program Axelrod designed for Mercury Chamber Orchestra, which opens its season Oct. 8 at the Wortham Center’s Cullen Theater. A post-concert dinner in the Grand Foyer will honor renowned socialite and longtime Mercury patron Lynn Wyatt, who also happens to be Axelrod’s great-aunt.

The four pieces of “Love’s Philosophy” are interconnected in intriguing ways; Axelrod calls the program a “love letter” to Houston. It opens with the Adagietto movement from Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, a love letter to the composer’s wife Alma that Axelrod calls “one of the most beautiful pieces ever written.

“It’s a unique program, not often done by Mercury, and it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase the best of what the orchestra could offer,” Axelrod says.
