Stuttgart's most luxurious two-door is officially on the way.
Maybach, the Stuttgart-headquartered luxury brand of Mercedes-Benz, will officially take its first-ever swing at tuning an SL, according to Mercedes' Monterey Car Week preview. First produced in 1954, the SL-Class is perhaps the most iconic name in Mercedes-Benz history, with the legendary 300 SL Gullwing silhouette born from its legacy. These days, the SL nameplate is synonymous with high-powered, top-down grand touring, and that emphasis on performance is about to expand.
Offered exclusively as an AMG model, the Maybach edition could use the 4.0-liter V-8 twin-turbo engine in the highest-powered AMG SL 63 variant, making up to 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. That said, Mercedes has yet to confirm any powertrain details for the Maybach version.Spy photos of Maybach SL-Class prototypes show camouflage placed on the front grille and rear end of the model, indicating that Maybach is working on a brand-specific look for the four-seat roadster.
