Behind Meg and her dancers, a black-and-white backdrop featured the words “Protect Black women” in bold letters while intricate patterns weaved in and out around the performers.

Halfway through the song, the music gave way to the sound of gunshots, and images of broken glass appeared behind Megan and her dancers. A recording ofspeech filled the room, while his words were projected onto the stage’s backdrop: “ The most disrespected…unprotected…neglected person in America is the Black woman. Who taught you to hate the texture of your hair? The color of your skin? The shape of your nose?
