Editions of one, and oozing with a cool that’s a bit 1970s, her sweaters and dresses are crocheted by hand and follow no pattern but the artist’s intuition and whim. Though demand is high and unauthorized copies rife, this Dane has makes pieces one-by-one, and sells them on Instagram.
“I think it’s important now to break up with the idea that you have fashion, or you have craft, and then you have art. Craft and fashion are like art’s ugly cousin, if you’re in the art world. It’s like you can’t mix them up. The world is different now…[you] need to be able to mix it [all] in and also understand that you’re not one thing or another thing. It’s everything.”
Kaalund’s openness sparks creativity. On the day we chatted she was making bags with a friend for fun, not for sale, and last year she teamed up with fellow Dane Anne Sofie Madsen to make dynamic one-off showpieces. Kaalund’s work is time consuming and her forays into the industry, she says, led her to think that “fashion needs to be a little bit more slow.
