Matt Carver, Robert Copley, and Desmond Jackson at the scorers table before the start of the first half of an NBA basketball game at Toyota Center on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022 in Houston. At the scorer’s table, he controls the clock from a machine outfitted with an antenna, a touch screen and only four buttons: A green start button, a red stop button, a power button and a horn button. A strip of LED lights at the top illuminates green when the clock is running and red when it is stopped.

Behind them, about 25 rows up, sit the statisticians, who communicate with Clayton via headset: Jim Mann , Matt Carver, Chuck Miller, Logan Fitzpatrick, Chris Bullock, Alec Duron and Matt Wallace. All look constantly to the officials, who explain rulings made on the floor and expect every event to be recorded accurately. In more than four decades sitting at the scorer’s table, Copley has seen it all.

He was the final adjudicator of the University of Houston’s one-point victory in the 1984 Southwest Conference men’s basketball championship game, when he confirmed that Arkansas’ final tip-in occurred too late, after the horn sounded. Back in Houston, Copley found his answering machine full of messages from journalists wishing to question him about the error — one he did not make, in a game he did not work.
