Meet Julie Kent, celebrity ballerina from 'Center Stage' and new Houston Ballet co-artistic director

One shopper recently approached Kent at Blue Mercury, a local beauty boutique, to say,"You look like my favorite ballerina from 'Center Stage'." Another time, the former principal dancer was recognized at Neiman Marcus in the Galleria.
"Another person stopped me at a restaurant to tell me she was a member and how she was so excited I was joining," Kent says. Herbert Ross' 1987 film with Mikhail Baryshnikov is one of Kent's two silver screen credits. The other is"Center Stage" from 2000, co-starring two ABT colleagues, Ethan Stiefel and Sascha Radetsky.
When Welch, formerly with Australian Ballet, came to America for the first time, he immediately cast Kent in the ABT world premiere of"Clear" in 2001. Sensing the time was right for change, Welch pitched a radical idea. He asked Kent if she'd consider joining Houston Ballet. "The enthusiasm, pride, commitment and investment in Houston Ballet is inspiring, because that's not always the case. It's not common," Kent says."It's truly remarkable what happens here."
