Beaches along the Delmarva Peninsula have been closed due to a significant amount of medical waste, including hypodermic needles, washing ashore. Ocean City, Maryland, and surrounding areas issued warnings advising beachgoers to avoid the ocean and wear shoes while on the beach. Officials are working to identify the source of the waste.

The warning from Maryland’s busiest resort town was joined by similar notices about surrounding beaches, including Fenwick Island in Delaware as well as Assateague State Park and Assateague Island National Seashore.
That park’s staff was also finding cigarillo tips and tampon applicators that had been used, Baldwin said in an email, noting there were no reports “of anyone encountering these items while swimming, nor any reports of injuries.”for Assateague Island National Seashore, which extends into Virginia, that all beaches on the Marylandside are closed to swimming and that the park’s north end is “closed to all visitation.
