The final straw, which saw me do a vertical take-off, punch through the roof and go soaring through the air in an arc like something out of a Roald Dahl book, was when Dr Mary Bousted, the joint general secretary of the National Education Union, wassaying that Reception and Year 1 pupils were “mucky, who spread germs, who touch everything, who cry, who wipe their snot on your trousers or on your dress”.
Her comments rang alarm bells for parents. The “safety” thing suddenly seemed to ring really hollow, we worried that it was just a fig-leaf used to keep her members out of schools and perpetuate a time-wasting fight with the Government.
