A 64-year-old Mechanicsburg woman died when she failed to merge out of a construction lane in the Tuscarora Tunnel in Huntingdon County, pummeling into several barricades and rear-ending a high-loader Wednesday night.
The woman was driving west on the Pennsylvania Turnpike approaching the Tuscarora Tunnel when she drove through several barricades, around two trucks with arrow boards, into the westbound tunnel and into a manned high lift loader at around 7:30 p.m., state police said. The westbound tunnel is closed for construction, according to state police. The westbound lane merges into a split eastbound tunnel.
The Chrysler Town and Country minivan the woman was driving sustained severe damage, according to state police, and she was declared deceased on-scene.
