Republicans on the panel launched blistering rhetorical attacks at Mayorkas over the administration’s handling of the border, calling him a “liar” and saying his policies have made him “complicit” in human trafficking.
Rep. August Pfluger, R-San Angelo, described the circumstances of the crash that killed the Tambungas, noted their family members were in the hearing room and asked Mayorkas if he would apologize for “the failure of your administration that led to the death of their loved ones?”“Our heart breaks for your loss,” he told them. “Our heart breaks for the loss of all victims of criminal activity.”
“Every day in my district they ask me, ‘Why isn’t the border secure? What can we do to enhance border security, so we are not overwhelmed?’” Luttrell said. “And every day your name comes up.” Sarah Hall of Conroe lost son Ethan Griffin, 22, in August 2020. Kim Gillihan of Cypress lost her 14-year-old son, Joshua, in August of last year. Both died after taking pills that were supposed to be something else but contained fentanyl.They said afterward it’s important to raise awareness among young people about the dangers of fentanyl, but the issue also is intertwined with border security.
