A sneaker wave and redwood tree nearly crushed a Sonoma family of three as they walked along Black Sands Beach in Humboldt County's Lost Coast last month. One of them sustained multiple fractures to their pelvis and was in the ICU for six days.
family survived a frightening encounter with mother nature a few weeks ago, and they are still working through the damages.
"We were keeping our distance from the shore break," said Marioni. "I heard a roar and looked over to see a wall of water coming toward us. The ‘sneaker wave’ launched a 15-foot beached redwood tree directly at us.""As it rolled over us I heard bones crushing," said Marioni. "The wave washed out the entire beach and pushed us into a freshwater stream."She said she wasn't able to move so her husband pulled her and the baby out of the water.
