Maryland led early in the second half but couldn’t keep up with No. 4 Ohio State in Columbus.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Maryland’s bid for what would have been a signature victory against No. 4 Ohio State began with a flourish but crumbled late, sending the Terrapins to their first loss of the season, 37-17, Saturday afternoon in a game players and coaches had indicated would serve as an assessment of the program’s progression.
“As I told our team just now, for us to take the next step we’ve got to be able to make the plays that are there to be made,” Terrapins Coach Michael Locksley said. “We had a couple of situations in the first half — we didn’t come away with a touchdown down inside the 5, we didn’t a fourth and one — and those are the types of plays where our best players have to show up and make plays, and we’ve got to do a better job as a coaching staff of putting them in those positions to make plays.
Ohio State began to pull away early in the fourth quarter on a scoring pass from quarterback Kyle McCord to Cade Stover on a play-action fake. McCord’s throw reached the senior tight end in stride, and Stover broke away from linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II for a 27-17 Buckeyes lead with 10:16 to play. The lead had swung to Ohio State for good on a 24-yard field goal by Jayden Fielding that gave the Buckeyes a 20-17 advantage with 2:19 to play in the third quarter.
