James Meredith , the first Black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi in 1962, was honored with a new historical marker in his hometown of Kosciusko, Mississippi. Meredith, 91, attended the unveiling ceremony on Friday, December 20, 2024, where he was recognized for his courage in fighting white supremacy and his legacy in the Civil Rights Movement.
The marker, placed by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, acknowledges Meredith's birthplace and his impact on history. Meredith, who prefers not to be called a civil rights leader, was surrounded by family and friends at the ceremony. He noted the special significance of their presence, particularly in the cold weather. Meredith's historic enrollment at Ole Miss in 1962 was met with violent protests from a white mob. He was protected by U.S. marshals throughout his time on campus. The university has since honored him on several occasions
