Mark Spencer, a teacher and the director of the West Side Theatre Guild, is set to fill the Gary Common Council’s vacant at-large seat after a Democratic Party caucus that will be held on Saturday.
Spencer, who unseated former council president William Godwin in the at-large Democratic primary in May, was the only candidate to file to run, Lake County Democratic Party Chair Jim Wieser confirmed to the Post-Tribune. The 72-hour deadline candidates to file elapsed on Wednesday. Spencer will be on the ballot for the Nov. 7 general election, alongside incumbent at-large councilmen Darren Washington and Ron Brewer.
The at-large role was left empty in September when Councilwoman Lori Latham, D-1st, was selected to succeed Godwin in representing the 1st District. Latham joined the council in January after being selected to fill a vacant at-large seat in another caucus. She ran successfully in the 1st District primary election and without a Republican candidate on the ballot, was already all but guaranteed to take the seat in January, when new council members are sworn in.
