Rounding out the top giving counties were San Mateo (2), Santa Clara (3), Contra Costa (4), Placer (5), Orange (6), San Francisco (7), Ventura (8), El Dorado (9) and Alameda (10).

The study “calculated how much people donate as a percentage of their net income and the proportion of people in each county who make charitable donations,” the company said.
With those two figures, the analysts came up with a “charitable county index.” Marin’s contributions as a percentage of income came to 2.8%, and its percentage of returns itemizing charitable contributions was 23.5%. The study was based on Internal Revenue Service data from 2021 that was released in March, said Vanishaa Doshi, a SmartAsset representative.
