Wheeling, West Virginia, has matched its 80-year high temperature record as a scorching heat wave continues to cook large portions of the country.The Pittsburgh office of the National Weather Service said in a post to X, formerly Twitter, that Wheeling had matched a 1944 record high of 95 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday. The small city is in West Virginia's northern panhandle region, roughly 60 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.
Forecasters have predicted that multiple cities in the northeastern and midwestern U.S. could experience extended periods of record-setting high temperatures this week due to a 'heat dome' hovering over the area.Extreme heat is expected in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and parts of New England until Friday, with temperatures in several areas already approaching 100 degrees on Tuesday.
