He will serve a long time in jail

A robber snuck into a pensioner's home before viscously assaulting him in a case one Nottinghamshire Police officer described as one of the worst she has seen. Jamie Wightman, 25, left his 81-year-old male victim with a stab wound to the leg and a fractured eye socket and spine, following the attack in the Bellamy Road area of Mansfield.

He subjected the man to a sustained assault as he demanded money and valuables, before fleeing the scene with the pensioner's wallet and mobile phone on the morning of Saturday, May 21 last year. Wightman, who was identified by fingerprints and CCTV, was arrested the same day and answered ‘no comment’ to all the questions posed to him by officers.

After pleading guilty to robbery, he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday, January 27, where he was jailed for 10 years and six months. Wightman, of Bamford Drive, Mansfield, will serve at least two thirds of his sentence and will serve an additional five years on license.Detective Constable Bethany Sumner, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was an incident that shocked and appalled the local community.

“Wightman chose not only to burgle an elderly man, but also to subject him to a sustained and wholly unnecessary attack. Unsurprisingly, what happened that day has had a significant emotional impact on the victim. I hope that today’s sentence offers him and his family some comfort as they come to terms with what happened.”
