A 46-year-old man from Cape May County, New Jersey, was arrested for allegedly interfering with the police investigation into the death of an unidentified woman found in Belleplain State Forest. He is accused of refusing to surrender his cell phone to investigators despite being ordered to do so. The man reportedly told police he had been to the forest and discovered the woman's body after initially taking items from a refrigerator there.

A Cape May County man was arrested after he allegedly interfered with the police investigation into the death of an unidentified womanThe 46-year-old man is charged with fourth degree obstruction and failure to be fingerprinted after police say he refused to provide his cell phone to investigators probing the woman’s death, according to a pair of criminal complaints filed by New Jersey State Police and the the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.

The man told police he went into the woods Dec. 21, hiking to the fridge and taking property from inside, State Police said in an affidavit of probable cause. The following day, he said he returned and found the woman’s body. The man previously spend nine years in a Pennsylvania state prison for involuntary deviate sexual intercourse on charges that were filed in Bucks County, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections told NJ Advance Media. He was released in 2012.

New Jersey State Police did not have any updates on the investigation when reached by NJ Advance Media for comment on Tuesday.
