A 35-year-old man was arrested after allegedly driving a van into the Everett Police Department’s parking lot, which then exploded and caught fire late Tuesday night. The EPD said the incident happened at about 9:15 p.m. at the South Precinct, 1121 SE Everett Mall Way. Police said a white van was driven into the parking lot and, shortly afterward, officers nearby heard an explosion from the van. The van was then engulfed in flames.

The driver, identified only as a 35-year-old male, had exited the van and was taken into custody, police said. The Everett Fire Department responded to help put out the fire. After an initial investigation, police said the suspect was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for first-degree arson. Police said the motive remains unknown.

At this time, investigators believe the explosion was caused by the fire over-pressuring the vehicle’s seals, leading them to rupture. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to call the Everett Police Department tip line at 257-8450 or Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound at 1-800-222-TIPS.
