Pilot tests for the world’s first malaria vaccine begin in Malawi
A Health Surveillance Assistant gives a dose of the malaria vaccine to the first recipient on April 23, 2019 at Mitundu Community hospital in Malawi's capital district of Lilongwe on the first day of the Malaria vaccine implementation pilot programme.
It aims to immunise 360,000 children aged two years and under in the three countries to assess the effectiveness of the pilot vaccine and whether the delivery process is feasible. Trade-named Mosquirix, the drug has been developed by British pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline in partnership with the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative.
"We need new solutions to get the malaria response back on track, and this vaccine gives us a promising tool to get there," he said.Malaria is spread to people through the bites of infected female anopheles mosquitoes. "A vaccine for malaria is among many innovations needed to bring an end to this disease," said Davis.
