Millions in the Ohio River Valley brace for a potentially heavy winter storm this weekend, with snow and freezing rain expected. Forecasters warn of major disruptions and dangerous travel conditions.
Forecasters predict a large winter storm will impact the central U.S. this weekend, bringing snow and freezing rain to millions in the Ohio River Valley. As of Friday morning, winter storm watches are active from Kansas through Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio. Over 24 million Americans are under a winter storm watch, according to the National Weather Service. These watches are anticipated to evolve into warnings within the next 24 hours.
The National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center indicates that existing cold air will result in widespread snow, likely heavy, across the Central Plains, Mid-Mississippi Valley, and Ohio Valley on Sunday. Government forecasters say snow will reach the Mid-Atlantic Sunday night into Monday. While the precise location of heaviest snowfall remains uncertain, models suggest areas near or along Interstate 70 could see up to a foot of snow. Forecasters warn of major impacts, including 'considerable disruptions to daily life', for areas along Interstate 70 from eastern Kansas into Indiana. The National Weather Service expects dangerous or impassable driving conditions, widespread closures, and disruptions to infrastructure. The agency advises against traveling if possible. This storm could potentially be the first major winter storm for many in the region this winter. Kansas City, which averages about 18 inches of snow per winter, has only had 1.1 inches so far this season. Indianapolis, which usually sees about 25 inches of snow annually, has had 1.7 inches.
