The artwork found in the 1,600-foot-deep cave is thought to have been made more than 24,000 years ago.
"The actual 'shock' of realizing its significance came long after the first discovery. Once we began the proper systematic survey we realised we were facing a major cave art site, like the ones that can be found elsewhere in Cantabrian Spain, southern France or Andalusia, but that totally lack in this territory," Ruiz-Redondo said.
In total, the researchers have documented more than 110"graphic units" at Cova Dones, including at least 19 confirmed representations of animals. The head of a horse painted with clay is seen in the Spanish cave. Unusually, the majority of the paintings found in the cave were made using clay—a rare find at Paleolithic sites."Animals and signs were depicted simply by dragging the fingers and palms covered with clay on the walls," Ruiz-Redondo said.
Aside from the animal designs, the rest of the artwork in the cave consists of conventional signs, such as rectangles, isolated lines and poorly preserved unidentified paintings, among other forms.
