Magnolia West senior competed all four years in team tennis, basketball, and baseball.
MAGNOLIA — James Ellwanger gets a majority of his notoriety as a proud member of the ‘Dirt Boys’, the first group from the Magnolia West baseball program to head to the University Interscholastic League Class 5A tournament, which starts Thursday in Round Rock.
The youngest of five siblings, Ellwanger, the ace right-handed pitcher of the Mustangs is doing something nobody else in his family has in reaching the state tournament. “The deal with the multi-sport athletes is we do the best job of anywhere I’ve been,” Magnolia West baseball coach Travis Earles said. “With McGehee and Coach Berna running our athletic organization, they are all about it. When it's baseball season, they’re baseball players. When it’s football season, they’re football players.”
A love for baseball, basketball, and tennis can be traced back to their father, Dan, while mother Christy was a swimmer. Basketball was next as Ellwanger thinks he started playing around 5 or 6 years old and tennis came after that. “First thing that struck me was he was crazy athletic. A lot of guys don’t understand that a 6-5, 6-6 tennis player can run the court and do some of these things a smaller guy can’t do.”
