AUSTIN — Madison Booker knew she would have a big first year at Texas, but she didn’t think she would end the regular season as the only freshman in Big 12 history to win Player of the Year. “I really didn’t think I was gonna be Player of the Year for the conference,” she said Wednesday after becoming just the second Texas player to earn the award. “Two months ago, I didn’t even know what I was gonna be doing or how I was gonna play when Rori went down.
“It was just a matter of how fast I could get her comfortable. How fast can I get her knowledgeable on what needs to happen in that role?” Schaefer also acknowledged the learning curve that came with having to replace an experienced point guard like Harmon. “Rori knows how to draw that foul,” Schaefer said. “When she gets doubled, she knows that if she can’t split it or get around it, she knows how to draw that foul. But she’s a veteran. Book’s probably still learning a bit of that.
